  • Rubio's

A reader recently asked me why I put Rubio's on notice.

Well it's not because their fish tacos taste like van de kamps fish sticks or that their corn tortillas taste like a catchers mitt or that the salsas at the salsa bar taste like glorified ketchup.

    fish taco and carnitas taco

no..the reason Rubio's was put on notice was because they put lettuce and a cheese medley on my carnitas taco.

*gasp* The Great Bandini has defiled himself with corporate tacos. Hopefully just an a deviation from the norm.

Bandini: You've accurately boosted Tacomiendo and Tacos Por Favor to at or near the top of Westside charts. But don't sleep on the final part of the holy trinity of Westside tacos: La Fiesta Brava on Rose at 423 Rose.

      Sinner!

How could you? Oh, the PAIN!

That's like trying to get tri-tip steak at McDonalds. EEW!

For your pennance, YOU must spend the entire month of January at the Mecca of Taco-dom. That's right, a month travelling the dusty roads and alleys of EAST LOS ANGELES.
If you do not the Taco gods will frown upon you. And
NO latin chick will look upon you as CALIENTE (hot)!

      hah!

it's not like I gave rubio's a good taco rating.

I will continue to expose the poor quality of the corporate taco on these pages.

taco reporting isn't always taste explosion king taco yummyness.

      onward!

No, I'm glad you braved the suck ass that is Rubio's, just for comparison's sake. Now us taco stalkers know: the great Bandini has sacrificed himself on the altar of corporate tacodom! We know for sure that Rubio's is bad. Bandini has digested for our sins!

I'm curious what you would think about Wahoo's Fish Tacos. Maybe give that a try sometime.

If you must atone for Rubio's, go to East L.A. for El Tepeyac. Have you tried that yet?

      scott,

Not a big fan of wahoo's. I prefer ensenada style fish tacos.

Now El Tepeyac I love. Havn't been there in years.

When I became a fan of Rubios, they had fewer locations than King Taco and they only served fish tacos. When they "became corporate" they added things to the menu (like tacos with lettuce and cheese) for people who didn't like authentic baja food. If you want a real taco at Rubios, try a street taco or the grilled mahi mahi taco which is still the best fish taco this side of the border.

more poison! down with RUBIOS and WAHOO"S!!!

Rubios has their fish battered and par-fried in China!? at least it's consistently mediocre now. Ralph Rubio is hangin' his head in shame, but laughing his way to the bank.
That street taco is $1.29 for 2 bites- WTF? The thing edible in that line is the Carnitas. Hormel does a nice job for them.

And yes, their salsa bar is a sad excuse for "mexican" salsa. I ate there 3 days ago to try the new frozen chili lime salmon taco, and the chipotle salsa was bubbling from fermentation activity. Yikes.
I told the manager about it, and they waited 30 minutes to change it out.
