  • LA City Council Raises Fines on Taco Trucks
    Thursday, July 20, 2006

Councilperson Janice Hahn sought out the higher penalties for “repeat offenders”

The LA city council responded to the taco community today my friends. As CBS news has reported the city council has raised the fines for violating the catering truck ordinance. Previously fines were between $45-90 for your first three offenses. The first offense is now $90 with the third raised to $300. That’s 90 and 300 tacos if your counting. I am.

As previously covered on these pages the LA City Council passed an ordinance that forces a catering truck to move location every hour or face penalties.

So this is just a reminder to email your city council person and to contact Mayor Villaraigosa's office asking him to veto the ordinance.

Also don't forget to sign the save the taco truck petition

The ordinance goes into affect on July 23rd.

Wow, I had no idea there were other Taco fanatics out there until I saw this Blog. I have been hunting NYC for the best Tacos. As for L.A., I once found a taco cart on Sunset and Vermont (near the subway stop) called La Taco da Vida and the tacos were simply amazing. Too bad I didn't have your blog while out there.
      Regards,

The only good thing to come out of Hurricane Katrina is it now possible to get a decent taco in New Orleans. The Mexican restaurants in this town of po-boys and jambalaya are pathetic, serving tacos on nasty flour tortillas. With the influx of Mexican work crews to rebuild the city came these amazing taco trucks parked in vacant lots and abandoned gas stations. My favorite is El Chapparal on parked in the old Wagner's Meat & Gas Station, corner of MLK and Claiborne. It's probably standard fare for angelinos, but a real upgrade for us and a quality of life boost for those of us who know something about tacos. I'm from Chicago, which is perhaps second only to L.A. in the realm of tacos.

Why must you make the great Taco hunt competetive between geographic locales? Are you aware of the enormous Latin community in NYC? It could just as well be said good luck finding Tacos in NYC as good as Mexico City, or Quito, etc. Sure, but this in no way effects the quality of the food I find nor the experience of the hunt, regardless of locale.

I haven't made it to L.A. is awhile, but a friend of mine is down their now using your website as a guide. He expects to hit about 8 places in 10 days.

Taco trucks are springing up around the outskirts of Seattle now and I hope to make it to one soon.

You should take a trip up to San Francisco and hit the Mission District. My favorite place is La Taqueria, but there's a lot more places to try.

It totally sucks about the L.A. city council. Other than the links you provided I couldn't find any news on the subject. Do you have any alternative weekly papers that might cover it?

      Hey Larry

Check out the seattle taco trucks link on the sidebar.

I havn't seen any news about the ordinance in any of our major newspapers or alternate weekly's. They may cover it if fines start getting shelled out. Havn't heard anything on that either.
